Jean-Philippe Mateta Leads France to Victory Over Egypt

Jean-Philippe Mateta scored twice as France came from behind to defeat 10-man Egypt 3-1 after extra time and advance to the final of the men’s Olympic football competition. The victory ensures that France, managed by Thierry Henry will secure a medal in the tournament for the first time in 40 years. The match held in Lyon saw Egypt take an early lead when Mahmoud Saber scored from close range.

However, Jean-Philippe Mateta equalized for France with a late goal, assisted by Michael Olise. In extra time, Mateta gave the French team the lead with a header, following the dismissal of Egypt’s Omar Fayed for a second yellow card. Fayed’s first booking came during stoppage time in the second half after he protested against a VAR review decision that denied a penalty to France.

The final score was confirmed when Olise scored France’s third goal, sealing their place in the final. Egypt, now eliminated from medal contention, will play Morocco in the bronze-medal match in Nantes on Thursday. France’s win means they will face Spain in the gold medal match at the Parc des Princes on Friday at 17:00 BST. This match will be a chance for France to win their first Olympic football medal in four decades.
