Jordan Chiles Loses Bronze as CAS Denies Reconsideration

Jordan Chiles will not regain her Olympic bronze medal as the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has refused to reconsider its ruling, despite new evidence from USA Gymnastics. The International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) promoted Romania’s Ana Barbosu from fourth to third place in the Paris 2024 women’s floor final following a CAS ruling. The Romanian Olympic Committee challenged Chiles’ bronze medal, arguing that the US team submitted the inquiry regarding Chiles’ score beyond the allowed one-minute appeal window.

CAS agreed with this challenge and ruled that the appeal was untimely and should be disregarded. USA Gymnastics tried to persuade CAS to review the decision by presenting new video evidence, claiming it showed that the appeal fell within the permissible time frame. However, CAS informed USA Gymnastics on Monday that their rules do not allow for reconsideration of an arbitral award, even with new evidence.

During the Paris 2024 final, Jordan Chiles initially ranked fifth but moved up to third after her coach, Cecile Landi, submitted an inquiry that increased her difficulty rating. The Romanian committee successfully argued that Landi filed the inquiry four seconds past the one-minute limit. USA Gymnastics showed CAS a letter and video indicating that Landi filed the request 47 seconds after the score’s publication.

They also submitted a follow-up statement 55 seconds later. Despite these submissions, CAS denied the reconsideration request. In response, USA Gymnastics expressed deep disappointment and announced plans to continue pursuing every possible appeal, including taking the matter to the Swiss Federal Tribunal, to seek justice for Chiles and ensure proper scoring and placement.
