Lee Zii Jia secured his first Olympic medal, clinching bronze at the Paris 2024 badminton tournament, despite his typically reserved demeanor. Unlike Viktor Axelsen, who celebrated his second consecutive gold with exuberance, Lee’s approach was more subdued. After overcoming Lakshya Sen 13-21, 21-16, 21-11, Lee reflected on the significance of his achievement.
Initially, Lee struggled with his performance after a semi-final loss to Thailand’s Kunlavut Vitidsarn. The defeat left him disheartened and questioning his desire for the bronze medal, as his goal had been to win gold. He admitted to having trouble eating and sleeping, feeling a deep sense of disillusionment. Despite these challenges, he managed to rally and shift his focus towards the bronze medal match.
In the final, Lee Zii Jia found himself trailing 8-3 in the second game, having lost the first. However, he gathered his resolve and reminded himself of the stakes. Determined not to fall short, he won the next nine points, regaining control and securing his victory. This win was especially meaningful as it made him only the third Malaysian male singles player to earn an Olympic medal, joining the ranks of Rashid Sidek and Lee Chong Wei.
Lee’s restrained celebration was not due to a lack of appreciation for his achievement but rather a reflection of his journey and personal growth. He explained that his reserved reaction was simply his way of processing the victory, acknowledging the hard work and perseverance that led to this moment. “I’ve been through so much and somehow I think I deserved it,” Lee said, underscoring the depth of his accomplishment.
