Marta Sent Off in Brazil’s 2-0 Loss to Spain

Marta, Brazil’s legendary forward, left the pitch in tears after receiving a straight red card during their 2-0 defeat by Spain in the Olympic women’s football tournament. The incident occurred in the Group C match in Bordeaux. Marta was sent off for a high-footed tackle. This match could potentially mark the end of Marta’s international career, as she plans to retire this year.

Subsequently, Spain scored twice in the second half, first in the 68th minute and again in the 17th minute of injury time, securing their victory and maintaining a perfect group stage record. Despite the loss, Brazil advanced as one of the best third-placed teams and will face hosts France in the quarter-finals. Notably, Marta, 38, has had an illustrious career, winning Olympic silver medals at Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008.

She holds the record for most goals scored in World Cups, men’s or women’s with 17 goals in 23 matches across six tournaments. Meanwhile, in other tournament news, the United States continued their dominant form with a 2-1 win over Australia, topping Group B. Goals from Trinity Rodman and substitute Korbin Albert secured their victory, although a late goal by Alanna Kennedy made for a tense finish.

The US, four-time gold medallists, will face Japan in the quarter-finals, a rematch of the London 2012 final. Additionally, Japan secured their quarter-final spot by finishing second in Group C after defeating Nigeria 3-1. Furthermore, reigning champions Canada also progressed with a 1-0 win over Colombia, despite a recent six-point deduction appeal. France topped Group A with a 2-1 victory over New Zealand.

Quarter-final fixtures:
– United States vs. Japan at 14:00 in Paris
– Spain vs. Colombia at 16:00 in Lyon
– Canada vs. Germany at 18:00 in Marseille
– France vs. Brazil at 20:00 in Nantes
