Novak Djokovic to Face Carlos Alcaraz in Olympic Gold Match

Novak Djokovic will face Carlos Alcaraz in the men’s singles gold-medal match, a rematch of last month’s Wimbledon final. Djokovic, who holds a record 24 Grand Slam titles advanced to the Olympic final for the first time after defeating Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-4, 6-2 on Friday. The 37-year-old Serbian star, who previously won bronze in Beijing 2008 and finished fourth in Tokyo 2021, has now reached the final in his pursuit of an Olympic gold, having won every other major singles title.

Novak Djokovic’s straightforward victory contrasted with his grueling five-set match against Lorenzo Musetti at the French Open, which concluded at 03:07 local time. He will now face the Spanish second seed, Carlos Alcaraz, who dominated Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime 6-1, 6-1 in the other semi-final. Alcaraz, aged 21, is competing in his third major final this year, having won both the French Open and Wimbledon in 2023.

In the women’s tournament, world number one Iga Swiatek secured the bronze medal. Swiatek, who had a 25-match winning streak on Parisian clay ended by Zheng Qinwen, missed out on the gold-medal match but bounced back with a convincing 6-2, 6-1 victory over Slovakia’s Anna Karolina Schmiedlova. This medal marks Poland’s first Olympic tennis achievement.

In mixed doubles, the Czech Republic’s Katerina Siniakova and Tomas Machac claimed gold by defeating China’s Wang Xinyu and Zhang Zhizhen with scores of 6-2, 5-7, 10-8. The bronze went to Canada’s Felix Auger-Aliassime and Gabriela Dabrowski, who won against the Netherlands’ Demi Schuurs and Wesley Koolhof.
