Rafael Nadal set up an exciting second-round clash with longtime rival Novak Djokovic at Paris 2024 after advancing from his opening singles match. Despite concerns about his fitness due to a thigh injury, the 38-year-old Nadal overcame Hungary’s Marton Fucsovics with a 6-1, 4-6, 6-4 victory.  Nadal, the 2008 Olympic gold medalist, demonstrated his resilience on Court Philippe Chatrier.

He returned to compete less than 24 hours after playing in the men’s doubles with Carlos Alcaraz. Nadal’s performance in the first set against Fucsovics eased initial worries about his physical condition but he struggled to maintain that level in the second set. With his thigh heavily strapped, Nadal showed his trademark tenacity by rallying in the final set to secure the win.

This victory sets up a highly anticipated match against Djokovic on Monday, not before 12:30 BST, marking their 60th career meeting. Djokovic, aged 37, advanced to the second round with a straightforward win over Australia’s Matt Ebden. Both players are among the greatest in tennis history, boasting a combined total of 46 Grand Slam singles titles with Djokovic leading 24-22. They have set numerous records that may remain unmatched.

Rafael Nadal had hinted last year that 2024 might be his final season on tour, although he has since softened his stance. His future in the sport remains uncertain due to ongoing injury issues over the past two years. Although Djokovic is a year younger, he continues to compete at the highest level and is striving to achieve the one major accolade still missing from his illustrious career which is Olympic gold.
