Shoko Miyata's Olympic Bid Ends Due to Smoking Breach

Shoko Miyata, the 19-year-old Japanese gymnast, has returned home and will not compete at the Olympic Games after she broke a team smoking ban. Officials investigated her alleged violation of the Japan Gymnastics Association’s (JGA) strict code of conduct which prohibits smoking. Miyata, who captains Japan’s women’s artistic gymnastics team, left the training camp in Monaco on Thursday while officials conducted their investigation.

After they confirmed her breach of the JGA rules, she flew back to Japan that same night. Consequently, Kenji Nishimura, the association’s secretary general, announced that discussions led to the decision for Miyata to withdraw from the Olympics. Nishimura also observed that Miyata looked “exhausted” during the camp. Furthermore, Miyata’s personal coach, Mutsumi Harada explained that Miyata struggled with the intense pressure of competing at the Games.

Harada emphasized the emotional toll and urged people to understand Miyata’s challenging situation. Despite her achievements, including winning a bronze medal at the 2022 World Championships in Liverpool, Miyata was set to lead a team of first-time Olympians in Paris. Her withdrawal represents a significant setback for Japan, which aims to secure its first artistic gymnastics team medal since the 1964 Tokyo Games.

As a result, the gymnastics competition starting on July 26 will proceed without her.
