Tom Cruise, the Hollywood superstar made a spectacular entrance at the Paris 2024 closing ceremony by abseiling from the roof of the Stade de France. Dressed in a leather jacket and gloves, Cruise descended into the stadium as H.E.R. performed on guitar. This dramatic stunt marked the handover to Los Angeles which will host the 2028 Olympics. In a pre-recorded segment, Cruise traveled through Paris and then the US where he visited the Hollywood sign and unveiled the Olympic colors.
This marked Paris’s formal farewell, as Thomas Bach, president of the International Olympic Committee, praised the Games as “sensational” in his closing speech. Bach highlighted the athletes’ “simply amazing” performances and the spirit of unity and peace that the Games showcased, despite global conflicts. Cruise’s appearance complemented a lively performance by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, who played their hit “Can’t Stop” on a beach in Los Angeles.
Billie Eilish and Snoop Dogg, performing alongside Dr. Dre, also energized the crowd. Snoop, a familiar face at the Games, joined the celebration as the US women’s basketball team clinched gold and secured the top spot on the medals table. Artistic director Thomas Jolly enhanced the cinematic atmosphere with a segment featuring dancers assembling the Olympic rings on stage.
French band Phoenix then further energized the crowd with their performances. Rumors had circulated about Cruise’s role in the closing ceremony before he was spotted at the stadium. Known for his daring stunts in films like “Mission: Impossible,” Tom Cruise’s appearance provided a fittingly dramatic conclusion to the Paris Games.
