Tom Daley and Helen Glover to Lead Team GB at Paris 2024

Tom Daley and Helen Glover will serve as Great Britain’s flagbearers at the opening ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. At 30, Daley, a four-time Olympic medallist will compete in his fifth Olympics after securing his long-awaited gold medal in Tokyo 2020 with the men’s 10m synchro. Notably, Daley will become the first British diver to compete in five Games. He expressed immense pride in his flagbearer role, calling it a dream come true. He will also defend his title alongside Noah Williams in Paris.

Meanwhile, Helen Glover, 38, a two-time Olympic champion, will take part in her fourth Games. She described her selection as flagbearer as “the biggest honour of my life.” Glover is aiming for her third Olympic title after retiring twice, first after Rio and then after Tokyo. During Tokyo 2020, she made history as the first mother to row for Great Britain at an Olympics and will compete in the women’s four in Paris.

In addition, the Paris 2024 opening ceremony will break tradition by not taking place in a stadium. Instead, around 10,500 athletes will travel a six-kilometre route along the River Seine, starting at Austerlitz Bridge and ending at Trocadero, near the Eiffel Tower. The ceremony is scheduled for Friday, July 26.

Furthermore, Tom Daley and Helen Glover’s selection highlights their significant contributions to British sports. Daley, motivated by his son Robbie views this Olympics as a bonus experience. Similarly, Glover, balancing competition with raising three children, expressed deep emotion at her honor. They join a distinguished list of past British flagbearers including Andy Murray in Rio and Chris Hoy in London.
