Tommy Fleetwood Settles for Silver in Paris 2024 Golf

Tommy Fleetwood fell just short of winning Olympic gold in men’s golf at Paris 2024, securing silver behind American world number one Scottie Scheffler. On the final day, Fleetwood and Scheffler both stood at 19 under par as they approached the 17th hole. However, Fleetwood bogeyed the 17th and misjudged his approach on the 18th, allowing Scheffler, who shot a course record-equalling nine-under 62 to take the gold.

Despite his final-round 66 and disappointment, Fleetwood received cheers from thousands of fans and expressed pride in his achievement, saying, “Part of me is disappointed, of course, but at the same time, I never dreamed I’d be an Olympic medallist.” Japanese golfer Hideki Matsuyama claimed bronze with a score of 17 under par. Home favourite Victor Perez finished fourth at 16 under while Rory McIlroy of Ireland and Spain’s Jon Rahm closely followed.

Tommy Fleetwood, who aimed to win his first major title with Olympic gold, started the final day one shot off the lead. Although he bogeyed the first hole, he quickly recovered with birdies on the next three holes. Despite another bogey on the seventh and strong competition from Rahm and Scheffler, Fleetwood’s performance remained impressive but Scheffler’s dominance on the back nine ultimately prevailed.

Since golf’s return to the Olympics in Rio 2016, the sport has gained acceptance with the event featuring eight of the top ten players and an enthusiastic crowd. Rory McIlroy, once skeptical, described the experience as one of the best individual competitions he has been part of. As the men’s tournament concludes, attention shifts to the women’s individual event starting Wednesday where British golfers Georgia Hall and Charley Hull will compete.
