Trinity Rodman Delivers for US in Quarter-Final Win

Trinity Rodman scored a decisive extra-time goal, leading Emma Hayes’ United States to a 1-0 victory over Japan in the women’s football quarter-finals at Paris 2024. The match at Parc des Princes ended goalless through regular time, with both teams struggling to find quality. Rodman delivered a stunning curling shot into the top-left corner just before half-time in extra time securing the win for the US.

The United States, who last won Olympic gold at London 2012, are chasing their fifth Olympic title under Hayes. Hayes, appointed as the new manager in May, is making her debut in a major tournament. Despite being a dominant force in women’s football, the US team encountered challenges recently including a disappointing performance at the 2023 Women’s World Cup where they fell to Sweden in the last 16.

Hayes, who previously led Chelsea to 13 major trophies over 11 years, showed visible frustration on the sidelines as her team missed chances. Sophia Smith and Mallory Swanson came close to scoring before Trinity Rodman’s goal broke the deadlock, leading to jubilation from Hayes and the USA fans. In other quarter-final action, Germany advanced to the semi-finals after Ann-Katrin Berger saved two penalties and scored the decisive spot-kick in a shootout.

The win came against the defending champions Canada. Germany will face the United States in the semi-finals. Additionally, Brazil upset hosts France with an 82nd-minute goal from Gabi Portilho, ending France’s campaign. This win could extend the international career of Brazil’s Marta, who plans to retire this year. Brazil will meet Spain in the semi-finals after Spain edged Colombia in a penalty shootout.
