Great Britain Breaks Paralympic Gold Record

Great Britain had their most successful day at a Paralympic Games this century achieving 12 gold medals on a record-breaking Super Sunday at Paris 2024. The day started with Hannah Cockroft winning her fourth consecutive T34 100m title, followed by Sabrina Fortune setting a world record in the women’s F20 shot put. In swimming, Britain secured four golds: Maisie Summers-Newton won the SB6 100m breaststroke, Brock Whiston triumphed in the SM8 200m individual medley, Grace Harvey took gold in the SB5 100m breaststroke and the mixed S14 4x100m relay team also emerged victorious.

The track cycling events brought three more golds for GB, with James Ball and Steffan Lloyd winning the men’s B 1,000m time trial, Sophie Unwin and Jenny Holl claiming the women’s B 3,000m individual pursuit and Jody Cundy, Jaco van Gass and Kadeena Cox taking gold in the open C1-5 750m team sprint. In rowing, Great Britain won three golds and a silver. Lauren Rowles and Gregg Stevenson won the mixed double sculls, Ben Pritchard secured the men’s single sculls gold and the mixed coxed four retained their title.

Annie Caddick and Sam Murray earned silver in the mixed PR3 double sculls. Cockroft now has eight Paralympic golds and is close to Tanni Grey-Thompson’s record. Fortune’s shot put world record was a highlight while in swimming, Whiston’s comeback and the relay team’s win marked standout performances. Track cycling saw redemption for Cox, who overcame an earlier disappointment.

The day’s achievements pushed GB’s total to 23 golds and 43 medals overall with China leading the medal table. On day five, GB will compete in events across Para-badminton, boccia, Para-archery, triathlon and swimming with live updates available on the BBC Sport website.
