Poppy Maskill Wins Third Gold at Paris Paralympics

Poppy Maskill of Great Britain won her third gold medal at the Paris Paralympics securing victory in the women’s S14 100m backstroke. At just 19 years old, Maskill has had a stellar Games adding this gold to her earlier wins including two golds and two silvers. Although Maskill trailed at the halfway point, she surged ahead to finish with a time of 1:05.74, narrowly beating Valeriia Shabalina.

Fellow Briton Olivia Newman-Baronius earned bronze in the event. Maskill’s triumph contributes to ParalympicsGB’s impressive tally of 41 gold medals in Paris matching their total from Tokyo 2020. Despite her success, Maskill expressed slight disappointment with her time, noting it wasn’t a personal best. “I’m obviously happy with my medals as they are a great achievement but I’m slightly disappointed in my time because I know I can be better,” she said.

With five medals to her name, Poppy Maskill now holds the record for the most medals won by a ParalympicsGB athlete. She had previously won gold in the 100m S14 butterfly and the mixed 4x100m S14 freestyle relay along with silvers in the 200m freestyle S14 and the 200m individual medley S14.

In other ParalympicsGB results, 17-year-old Mark Tompsett claimed bronze in the men’s S14 100m backstroke and Maisie Summers-Newton added another bronze to her collection in the women’s S6 400m freestyle complementing her two gold medals from earlier in the Games.
