Tom Craig Banned for 12 Months Over Cocaine Allegations

Tom Craig a hockey player for Australia has received a 12-month ban from the sport after French police detained him during the Paris 2024 Olympics on suspicion of attempting to buy cocaine. Craig, 29, must serve half of the suspension with the remaining six months suspended contingent on his adherence to conduct and behavioral requirements.

The ban, which began on September 9, means Craig will be eligible to return to the national men’s squad for the 2025 season with team selections set for later this year. Although French authorities released Craig without charge, he received a warning from a judge following the incident which occurred shortly after Australia’s quarter-final loss in Paris.

Hockey Australia announced that Craig will need to complete mandatory training and educational programs as part of his sanction. The organization emphasized that Craig has access to all athlete support services during his suspension and that his welfare remains a top priority. In a statement, Craig admitted to making a “terrible mistake” and expressed regret, apologizing to his family, friends, teammates and the Australian Olympic team.

Chef de mission Anna Meares described Craig as “a good person who made a bad decision.” Tom Craig, who has over 100 appearances for Australia was part of the team that won a silver medal at the Tokyo 2021 Olympics. Despite the setback, Hockey Australia is focused on supporting Craig’s rehabilitation and ensuring his return to the sport in good standing.
