Paul Hughes’ Title Dream Dashed by Usman Nurmagomedov’s

Paul Hughes’ quest to become Bellator lightweight champion fell just short as Usman Nurmagomedov secured a thrilling majority decision victory in Dubai. Nurmagomedov retained his title and extended his unbeaten streak to 19-0, with judges scoring the fight 47-47, 48-46, 48-46 in his favor. Despite his loss, Hughes, who was aiming to elevate his career after a big win over AJ McKee in October, earned respect for his performance.
Nurmagomedov acknowledged his mistake of underestimating Hughes, saying, “It was my little mistake but I’m still undefeated,” and praised his opponent’s strength and wrestling defense. A visibly disappointed Hughes expressed his heartbreak, believing he had won the fight and calling for a rematch in Belfast. “I really thought I won that one. I should have pushed harder,” he said, adding that a rematch in Belfast was a must.
The fight itself was a technical and entertaining battle. Paul Hughes had vowed to take Nurmagomedov to the “depths of hell” and knock him out in the second round. While that didn’t materialize, Hughes caused significant problems for the champion, especially in the second round where he landed a switch kick and defended several takedown attempts. A third-round groin shot and point deduction for Nurmagomedov slowed the momentum while a clash of heads in the fourth round caused a cut on Hughes’ forehead.
Despite these setbacks, Nurmagomedov pushed through, landing key takedowns and kicks in the final rounds. As the fight ended, both fighters believed they had done enough to win but it was Nurmagomedov’s name called out. Hughes, although devastated, vowed to get his victory in a future rematch, showing respect for the champion.
