Adam Jones, the former Wales prop will join Warren Gatland’s coaching staff as a scrum consultant for the 2025 Six Nations. Jones, 43, currently serves as the scrum and transition coach for Harlequins, who have granted him a secondment for the tournament. His involvement with Wales will begin after Harlequins’ match against Northampton on January 24 and will end after the Six Nations finale against England on March 15.
Jones will work alongside Wales’ forwards coach Jonathan Humphreys and will continue supporting Harlequins remotely throughout the tournament. He expressed excitement at the opportunity, acknowledging that it would be a challenge transitioning from Premiership coaching to international rugby. This will be his first experience in international coaching.
This move follows an independent review of Welsh rugby after a tough autumn campaign. The review, which included feedback from players led to the decision to retain Gatland as head coach and bolster his backroom staff. Gatland welcomed Jones’ and Andy McCann’s appointments, thanking Harlequins for releasing Jones for the Six Nations. McCann, a psychology and human performance specialist will also join the staff.
Furthermore, Adam Jones a former player with 100 international caps including four Six Nations titles and a British and Irish Lions tour, brings a wealth of experience. He played for Neath, Ospreys, Cardiff Blues and Harlequins, retiring in 2018 to focus on coaching. Since then, he has contributed to the development of players like Joe Marler, Kyle Sinckler and Fin Baxter.
Additionally, Harlequins director Billy Millard expressed confidence that Jones would benefit from his international coaching experience while continuing to support the club’s campaign. Former Wales centre and WRU board member Jamie Roberts also praised McCann’s expertise in supporting players’ mental and motivational needs.
