Andy Farrell Confident in Sam Prendergast Ahead of Fiji Test

Andy Farrell, Ireland head coach is confident that 21-year-old fly-half Sam Prendergast is ready for the biggest challenge of his young career. Prendergast, who has only started eight games for Leinster will make his first start for Ireland against Fiji, having come off the bench in last week’s win over Argentina. Farrell believes Prendergast’s experience on the Emerging Ireland tour of South Africa where he impressed with his leadership and assertiveness, has prepared him for the Test stage.

Farrell spoke highly of Prendergast’s character describing him as composed and confident without being overconfident. He also made seven changes to the team for the Fiji match including giving debuts to Ulster back-row Cormac Izuchukwu and Leinster hooker Gus McCarthy. Farrell praised Izuchukwu’s athleticism and how he’s matured since his first Emerging Ireland tour, noting that his progress has been impressive.

Regarding McCarthy, Farrell highlighted the player’s leadership qualities, pointing out his maturity on and off the field which earned him a place in the squad after impressing in training. Farrell also recalled Ulster wing Jacob Stockdale to the starting lineup for the first time in over a year, citing Stockdale’s recent form and hunger for the opportunity. Farrell believes Stockdale deserves the chance to prove himself again at Test level.

Ireland comes into the match after a 22-19 victory over Argentina having led 22-9 at halftime but had to hold on in the second half to avoid a second consecutive defeat. Andy Farrell stressed the need for better discipline and continuity in attack urging his players to maintain the same intensity throughout the game especially in the closing stages.
