Andy Farrell Reflects on Gritty Ireland Win Over Argentina
Andy Farrell, Ireland’s head coach reflected on his team’s gritty 22-19 victory over Argentina in the Autumn Nations Series, calling it a chaotic game where they “just about got there.” Driven to bounce back after New Zealand ended their home unbeaten run, Ireland raced to a 12-0 lead and built a 13-point advantage at halftime. However, a resurgent Argentina dominated the second half and kept Ireland scoreless, narrowly missing a historic win on Irish soil.
Farrell described the match as feeling like “three or four games in one” and expressed satisfaction with the win despite identifying areas for improvement. “We said last week we had a chance of winning ugly. We did that this week, so that’s a plus,” he said. Ireland’s discipline posed a challenge, as the team conceded 13 penalties and saw Finlay Bealham and Joe McCarthy receive yellow cards. Farrell attributed these lapses to players’ over-eagerness to help the team, urging them to show more patience and trust the system.
Earlier, Farrell hinted that some players retained their starting spots due to luck after a lackluster performance against New Zealand. While he noted some improvement “in parts” against the Pumas, he emphasized that the team is still adjusting to the intensity of high-stakes matches. Farrell noted that Ireland is still adapting to the intensity required to compete for a full 80 minutes in top-tier games.
He attributed this to the team’s limited exposure to elite-level rugby compared to sides like New Zealand and Argentina. Andy Farrell remains optimistic that his team will continue growing through the series and reach their peak in the coming matches.
