Bath emerged victorious against Sale in the Gallagher Premiership semi-final with a score of 31-23, securing their spot in the Premiership final. This triumph marks Bath’s first appearance in the final in nine years. Contributing to Bath’s success was Niall Annett, whose late try sealed the win in the 73rd minute.
Bath showcased dominance from the outset in front of their home crowd at the Recreation Ground. Led by Ted Hill’s opening try, Bath built momentum early on. Beno Obano’s additional try and Finn Russell’s precise penalty kicks further solidified Bath’s lead. However, Sale staged a comeback with tries from Ben Curry and Tommy Taylor, narrowing the margin to just three points by halftime.
In the second half, Sale briefly seized the lead with a try from winger Tom O’Flaherty. Nonetheless, Finn Russell’s accuracy in kicking kept Bath in control. Russell’s four penalties including one that granted Bath a one-point lead with 15 minutes remaining, were pivotal.
Bath’s journey to the final has been remarkable, considering their previous position at the league’s bottom just two years ago. Director of Rugby Johann van Graan expressed gratitude and praised the players and staff for rejuvenating belief and pride in the Bath Rugby club. Despite the intensity of the game, he credited Sale for their sportsmanship in defeat. Meanwhile, Bath fly-half Finn Russell expressed delight at reaching the final in his debut season but stressed the team’s ultimate goal of clinching the Premiership title.
Sale Sharks director of rugby Alex Sanderson conveyed disappointment and frustration at the season’s premature end. He acknowledged his team’s lack of composure and inconsistency in maintaining pressure on Bath. Despite the defeat, he commended his players for their progress over the past three years. Similarly, Sale fly-half George Ford expressed disappointment but recognized opportunities for improvement, pledging to return stronger next season.
Bath’s triumph sets the stage for an eagerly anticipated final showdown against Northampton Saints, who defeated last season’s champions, Saracens, in their semi-final match. Scheduled for Twickenham on June 8th, the final promises to be a captivating clash between the league’s top two teams.
