Ben Youngs Reveals Heart Surgery After Training Collapse

Ben Youngs, the former England scrum-half revealed he underwent heart surgery earlier this year after collapsing during an open training session with Leicester Tigers. The 34-year-old, who holds the record as England’s most-capped men’s player, received a diagnosis of an irregular and abnormally fast heartbeat. Youngs recounted the incident at Welford Road where he had to stop and lay down due to his heart pounding rapidly, describing it as a moment of concern.

Despite the unsettling experience, he expressed relief in a recent episode of his For The Love Of Rugby podcast which he co-hosts with Leicester Tigers teammate Dan Cole. Youngs noted that the heart issue had occurred intermittently throughout his life without prior knowledge, prompting him to seek medical intervention. After undergoing surgery, he expects to fully recover by the start of the new Premiership season in September.

He praised the support from the club, which helped him through the process. Youngs reassured fans that, following the surgery, he is on the mend and optimistic about his return to full fitness. With the procedure having a high success rate, he anticipates no further complications with his heart.

Ben Youngs remains hopeful about being fit and ready for the new season, as he now expects to resolve his heart issues.
