Blair Murray Set for Wales Debut Against Fiji

Blair Murray will make his Wales debut against Fiji in Cardiff on Sunday after Warren Gatland named him in the squad for the opening match of the Autumn Nations Series. The 23-year-old Scarlets wing born in New Zealand, qualifies for Wales through his mother from Tonyrefail. Additionally, centre Max Llewellyn earns his third cap and starts alongside Ben Thomas in the midfield.

Gareth Anscombe returns at fly-half and Tomos Williams will start at scrum-half marking his first Test in over a year after recovering from a groin injury. Blair Murray, who joined Scarlets from New Zealand’s Crusaders this summer has impressed Gatland in his six-game stint. His left-footed kicking option adds variety to the squad.

Furthermore, as one of two uncapped players in the 35-man squad, Murray is set to have family and friends fly in from New Zealand for the match. In the back three, full-back Cameron Winnett and Mason Grady, who switches to wing from inside centre will join Murray. Meanwhile, in the forward pack, locks Will Rowlands and Adam Beard return while flanker Jac Morgan will start on the bench.

Bath prop Archie Griffin, despite a minor heart condition has recovered to fitness and remains in the squad. Wales, who have lost their past nine internationals, hope experienced players like Anscombe (33), Rowlands and Wainwright (who returns from a hamstring injury) will lead the team and break their losing streak.

Moreover, Fiji ranked just above Wales in the world rankings have made six changes with key backs like Josua Tuisova and Semi Radradra returning to the starting lineup. Wales will start their Autumn Nations Series against Fiji, followed by matches against Australia and South Africa.

Former referee Nigel Owens will also join the coaching staff in an advisory capacity.
