Bo Westcombe-Evans made an impressive debut, scoring as England kicked off their WXV1 title defense with a dominant nine-try victory over the United States in Canada. Despite a slow start, the Red Roses quickly rallied securing four first-half tries including a brilliant solo effort from full-back Ellie Kildunne, who finished the match with two tries.

The match began with hooker Lark Atkin-Davies opening the scoring, followed by Kildunne’s stunning try. The USA’s Alev Kelter responded scoring for her team but flanker Georgia Brock making her first start added England’s third try followed by a fourth from captain Alex Matthews. Kelter scored her second try at the start of the second half, narrowing the gap but Bo Westcombe-Evans’s sharp finish restored England’s lead.

The USA’s captain, Kate Zackary scored another try but England closed out the match strongly with additional scores from Morwenna Talling, Jess Breach, Kildunne and substitute Ella Wyrwas. Head coach John Mitchell praised debutants Westcombe-Evans and inside centre Phoebe Murray for their performances, highlighting their need to continue building confidence in the squad.

Mitchell also praised Georgia Brock’s impressive defensive work recording 22 tackles and 15 carries in her first start. England, ranked number one in the world, is a heavy favorite to retain the title they won last year in New Zealand. Mitchell utilized this match to rotate his squad following victories in warm-up matches.

After a slow start, England showcased their attacking prowess especially in the second half, as they looked ahead to their next match against New Zealand next Sunday. Fly-half Zoe Harrison returning from injury made a significant impact, contributing effectively to the team’s performance and kicking for the posts with accuracy.
