Chandler Cunningham-South: A Rugby Tale of Two Homes

Chandler Cunningham-South a flanker for England has found New Zealand to be familiar territory despite being uncharted for many in his young squad. Born in London, he moved to Auckland at a young age and quickly immersed himself in rugby at Silverdale Rugby Club. His love for the sport blossomed early, marked by his enthusiasm for tackling and running. After stalling in his rugby development in New Zealand and lacking academy opportunities, Cunningham-South took matters into his own hands. He created a highlight reel which led to a move to London Irish at just 18 years old, much to his mother’s initial reluctance.

However, this decision proved pivotal, allowing him to showcase his talents on a professional stage. Despite offers to return to New Zealand, Cunningham-South chose to remain in London, asserting his identity as a “London boy.” His journey reflects a blend of English roots and Kiwi influences with his mother, Caroline, navigating her dual loyalties during matches. Ahead of England’s clash with New Zealand at Eden Park, Chandler faces the familiar flurry of ticket requests from old friends while Caroline balances her support for England with her deep affinity for New Zealand.

Their journey, though unconventional, underscores Chandler’s determination and Caroline’s pride in his achievements. As Chandler continues to shine in the England jersey, his journey serves as a testament to perseverance and following one’s instincts leaving both Auckland and English fans alike appreciative of how his unique path has unfolded.
