David Nucifora, the performance director of Scottish Rugby will take on a surprising role with the British and Irish Lions for their upcoming tour of Australia. Nucifora, who previously worked closely with Lions coach Andy Farrell during his decade-long tenure at Ireland, is set to join Farrell’s coaching staff, seconded from the Scottish Rugby Union (SRU). His deep knowledge of Australian rugby, combined with his experience with the home nations will prove valuable as the Lions aim to win their first Test series in 12 years.
Nucifora’s career in rugby includes notable achievements such as winning the Rugby World Cup with Australia in 1991 and coaching the ACT Brumbies to success in the 2000s. He also served as the general manager of the Australian Rugby Union’s High-Performance Unit from 2009. After leaving Irish Rugby at the end of the 2023-2024 season, David Nucifora joined the SRU in August 2024.
Farrell has yet to officially confirm his coaching appointments for the Lions, although strength and conditioning expert Aled Walters, who joined Ireland from England will likely join the team. Former Lions coach Warren Gatland expressed surprise at Farrell’s delay in finalizing his backroom staff, believing it would have been beneficial to establish continuity earlier.
Ireland forwards coach Paul O’Connell a former Lions player, remains a strong contender for a role with the Lions while Simon Easterby has temporarily taken charge of Ireland’s defense in Farrell’s absence. Farrell’s coaching team is shaping up to be dynamic with a mix of experience and fresh perspectives, promising an exciting tour of Australia.
