Dorothy Wall, Ireland’s lock called their stunning 29-27 victory over world champions New Zealand “just mad.” She highlighted the team’s revitalization under coach Scott Bemand. Replacement Erin King sealed the win with a last-minute try that leveled the score, followed by a decisive conversion from fly-half Dannah O’Brien that struck the upright.
“It’s crazy where we’ve come in two years,” said Wall, reflecting on the transformation since the team finished bottom of the 2023 Six Nations after losing all five matches. Three months later, Bemand took over as coach after a tumultuous period that included failing to qualify for the World Cup and receiving a letter from 62 past and present players who expressed a loss of trust in the Irish Rugby Football Union (IRFU).
Wall praised Bemand and his staff for making significant changes, particularly in strength, conditioning and nutrition. She emphasized the team’s preparation, saying, “We were prepared to be in that scenario. We all knew what the plan was, and we delivered.” Two-try hero Aoife Wafer echoed Wall’s sentiments, describing the mood in the camp as “pretty indescribable.”
Wafer reflecting on her performance, stated, “As a kid growing up in rugby, I’ve dreamed of this day,” noting the pride she felt in overcoming the Black Ferns. She credited her teammates for creating the space that allowed her to shine. Ireland will next face hosts Canada on Saturday before concluding the tournament against the United States.
Dorothy Wall expressed the team’s intention to savor this historic victory while acknowledging the challenge ahead. “We’ll enjoy it. It’s not often you beat the Black Ferns,” she said.
