England delivered a dominant performance with a nine-try victory over New Zealand, moving closer to retaining their WXV1 title in Canada. Wing Jess Breach shone with a hat-trick while Abby Dow and Ellie Kildunne each scored two tries helping extend England’s winning streak to 19 games. This marks their third consecutive win over the world champions within the past year.

Despite New Zealand scoring first through Kaipo Olsen-Baker and later adding tries from Ayesha Leti-l’iga, Georgia Ponsonby, Maia Roos and Maama Vaipulu, they struggled to contain England’s relentless attack. England’s strong performance driven by coach John Mitchell’s expansive style, highlighted their improved attacking structure. Slick handling and sharp finishing were key with Breach’s hat-trick sealing the game.

Mitchell praised his side’s clinical execution especially their ability to involve the back three in play. For New Zealand it marked a third consecutive loss following a shock defeat to Ireland. While they showed moments of promise, they were unable to match England’s precision. As the Black Ferns prepare for next year’s World Cup, they may need to rethink their strategy to defend their title.

England will next take on undefeated hosts Canada in a crucial WXV1 showdown while New Zealand aims to bounce back in their match against France. Mitchell’s side continues to grow with their sights set on the 2025 World Cup where they could once again face the Black Ferns in another potential final.
