England End Autumn Series on High with Dominant Win

England captain Jamie George believes his team is “in a very good place” after securing a dominant 9-try win over Japan in their final Autumn Nations Series match at Twickenham. The victory ensured Steve Borthwick’s side avoided a sixth consecutive loss, following close defeats to New Zealand, Australia and South Africa. Despite leading in both the New Zealand and Australia games, England fell short in the closing stages but George remains optimistic about their progress.

“We’re being coached well, but we need to execute for 80 minutes,” George told BBC 5 Live. “We’ve put some of the best teams under pressure, and we could have won all three of those games. The team is in a good place.” England have suffered seven defeats this year with only two losses by more than one score—against South Africa and Scotland. Borthwick has used the year to introduce new talent, following retirements from key players after the Rugby World Cup.

Youngsters like Ollie Sleightholme and Tommy Freeman have impressed with Freeman providing a highlight against Japan with a brilliant behind-the-back pass to George Furbank. Fly-half Marcus Smith has also shone, solidifying his place as England’s starting number 10. Former head coach Eddie Jones praised Smith for his maturity, noting his improved decision-making after nearly 40 Test caps.

Jones, now coaching Japan also praised Borthwick’s team, believing they are heading in the right direction despite some challenging moments. Looking ahead, England’s next match is against Ireland in Dublin on February 1 to kick off their 2025 Six Nations campaign. Both George and Jones are confident that England is progressing well under Borthwick’s leadership.
