England’s international season, which commenced in Cardiff on 5th August and concluded in Auckland with a sense of familiarity, mirrored their recent encounters. Similarly, like their previous match in Dunedin, England displayed resilience in the first half, rallying around the break to gain momentum. However, despite their efforts, they faltered in the final quarter against New Zealand’s strengthened bench, resulting in another agonizing defeat.

The series loss prompts reflection among England supporters: Is it a sign of progress under Steve Borthwick or a significant missed opportunity? On one hand, Captain Jamie George described it as both, acknowledging the team’s evolution despite the challenges. In the past eight months, England faced top-tier opponents, with matches reflecting competitiveness and narrow margins.

On the other hand, Vice-captain Henry Slade expressed optimism, noting England’s competitiveness against the world’s top sides. However, Borthwick emphasized improving scoreboard pressure, scrummaging efficiency and tactical awareness in tight games. Reflecting on England’s late-game leads in recent fixtures, Borthwick stressed the importance of converting such advantages into victories.

In 2024, England’s transition includes eight new caps and a youthful backline with talents like Feyi-Waboso, Smith and Sleightholme, posing ongoing challenges. Particularly, at the tight-head prop position, depth remains a concern beyond veteran Dan Cole. Looking ahead, Borthwick emphasized the need for accelerated player development and consistency in team selection.

England plans to capitalize on George Ford’s return to enhance their resilience and spirit for future success. The upcoming focus shifts to tactical acumen and organizational discipline, with redemption sought against the All Blacks in November at Twickenham. Throughout their journey, England’s determination and fighting spirit remain central, shaping their path forward in international rugby.

Moreover, as they navigate these challenges, England continues to look for opportunities to improve and make strides towards their goals.
