Freddie Thomas and Blair Murray Join Wales' Autumn Squad

Freddie Thomas and Blair Murray have earned their first call-ups to Wales’ 35-man squad for the autumn series in November. New Zealand-born Murray, who qualifies through his mother, plays as a wing for the Scarlets while Gloucester lock Thomas has previously represented England at under-18s and under-20s levels but is switching allegiance due to his Welsh grandparents. Head coach Warren Gatland made headlines by recalling 31-year-old Dragons scrum-half Rhodri Williams more than a decade after his last cap.

Gareth Anscombe, Nicky Smith and Tomos Williams return to the squad following absences adding valuable experience as Wales looks to recover from nine consecutive Test losses. Aaron Wainwright one of the few players with 50 caps remains in the squad despite not having played this season due to injury. Wales will kick off their campaign against Fiji in Cardiff on November 10 followed by matches against Australia and world champions South Africa.

“This is an exciting squad with key experience joining the younger players,” Gatland said, noting the growing depth and competition within the team. Dewi Lake retains the captaincy, although he faces competition from Jac Morgan, who returns from injury. Murray’s selection follows his first try for the Scarlets and Gatland highlighted his speed and versatility, particularly in addressing full-back depth.

Thomas’s inclusion is also significant as he joins four other Gloucester players in the squad. Meanwhile, injuries continue to plague Wales with Taulupe Faletau, Josh Adams and others sidelined. Gatland expressed concerns over the fitness of several front-row players, leaving out injured props Corey Domachowski and Leon Brown while Cardiff back-row Mackenzie Martin and Dragons flanker Taine Basham also missed the cut.
