George Ford had to leave the field just seven minutes into Saturday's loss against Saracens.
George Ford received a significant fitness boost for the upcoming November internationals as doctors confirmed that his quad injury does not require surgery. The 31-year-old sustained a torn right quad during Sale’s defeat to Saracens last weekend raising concerns about his availability for England’s autumn campaign. After a “positive consultation,” Ford now aims to be fit for England’s opener against New Zealand on Saturday, November 2.
Sale released a statement on Thursday announcing that he will begin his rehabilitation in preparation for a busy schedule for both club and country. While a worst-case scenario could sideline Ford for up to eight weeks both he and Sale remain optimistic about an earlier return. However, Ford will miss at least his club’s next two Premiership matches, giving Harlequins’ Marcus Smith and Northampton’s Fin Smith an opportunity to compete for the England No. 10 shirt in his absence.
George Ford played a key role during the Six Nations earlier this year contributing to England’s three wins in five matches. However, an Achilles injury forced him to miss the summer tour of New Zealand. In his absence, Marcus Smith stepped in and started both Tests against the All Blacks making him the frontrunner to retain the starting spot if Ford cannot recover in time.
This weekend, the Smiths will face off as champions Northampton host Quins at Franklin’s Gardens. After the match against New Zealand, England will take on Australia, South Africa and Japan in consecutive weekends at Twickenham’s Allianz Stadium.
