George Furbank the 28-year-old full-back may miss England’s Six Nations opener after he fractured his arm during Northampton’s 30-21 win over the Bulls in the Investec Champions Cup on Saturday. Furbank had to leave the field in the 29th minute after Bulls captain Elrigh Louw tackled him. Northampton head coach Sam Vesty said the injury is still under assessment and Furbank may need surgery.

The timeline for Furbank’s return remains uncertain because recovery times for fractures vary but with England’s Six Nations campaign starting against defending champions Ireland on February 1, Furbank’s availability is in question. He has been an essential player for both Northampton and England having started three of England’s four autumn internationals.

If he misses the Six Nations opener, Leicester’s Freddie Steward could step in at full-back, a role he filled during Furbank’s injury in the 2024 Six Nations. Furbank’s injury is a significant setback for Northampton, who have struggled in the Premiership with a record of three wins from seven matches. The Saints hope their win in Pretoria will help reignite their season before their away match against Saracens.

Vesty praised Furbank’s leadership, counter-attacking ability and calmness on the field, highlighting his importance to the team. Furbank has become a key leader for both club and country and Northampton will miss his presence. The team will need to adjust their lineup as they await further medical updates.

The next few weeks will determine whether George Furbank can recover quickly enough to make the England squad for their Six Nations clash against Ireland.
