Henry Slade Named Premiership Player of the Season for 2023-24
Henry Slade, the Exeter Chiefs and England center, clinched the Premiership player of the season for 2023-24. He outshone nominees Fin Smith, Courtney Lawes and Finn Russell. Immanuel Feyi-Waboso, Slade’s teammate, secured the breakthrough player of the season title. Phil Dowson, guiding Northampton to the top of the Premiership table, earned the director of rugby award. Despite Slade’s stellar performance, Exeter Chiefs narrowly missed the Premiership playoffs after a loss to the Leicester Tigers.
Slade recently inked a new contract with Exeter, ending speculation about a move to France. Initially omitted from England’s Rugby World Cup squad, Henry Slade started all five Six Nations matches this year, tallying 62 caps. Winger Feyi-Waboso, at 21, made his international debut during the Six Nations, opting to represent England over Wales. He clinched the breakthrough player award over competitors from Harlequins and Newcastle.
Among the additional awards, Saracens’ Andy Christie was honored as the community player of the season, recognizing his outstanding contributions off the field. Additionally, Wayne Barnes received special recognition for his illustrious refereeing career, culminating in officiating the Rugby World Cup final between South Africa and New Zealand in October before retiring. These accolades highlight the significant impact of individuals both within and beyond the realm of professional rugby.
