Hull FC Honors Rob Burrow with Second Season Win Over Leeds

Hull FC secured only their second victory of the season with a poignant win over Leeds at the MKM Stadium where both teams honored the late Rhinos legend Rob Burrow. Leeds played their first match since Burrow’s passing at 41 due to motor neurone disease (MND) earlier in June with tributes including applause before and during the game for the eight-time Grand Final winner.

Despite torrential rain causing handling errors in the first half, Hull FC surged ahead just before halftime with tries from Lewis Martin and Denive Balmforth, leading 12-0 at the break. Brad Scott extended their lead after the interval, while Leeds managed to score through Ash Handley and Harry Newman late in the game. This victory marked an end to Hull FC’s streak of 11 consecutive losses in league and cup matches.

Leeds, having lost three of their last four games, remain two points away from the top six. Hull FC interim head coach Simon Grix reflected on the win, emphasizing the team’s persistence and hard work finally paying off. He acknowledged areas for improvement but praised his team’s commitment and the positive feeling of leading at halftime.

Leeds Rhinos head coach Rohan Smith acknowledged the promise shown by his squad despite the loss. He emphasized the emotional challenge of playing following Burrow’s death and expressed pride in his players’ efforts to honor him on the field. Looking ahead, Leeds will host Leigh while Hull FC aims to build on their success against Warrington next Saturday at home.
