Jack Nowell has opened up about the challenges he faced in his first season with French side La Rochelle, particularly in adjusting to life off the field. After leaving Exeter Chiefs in the summer of 2023, Nowell quickly adapted to the rugby side of things but settling his family in France proved difficult. Nowell a father of three shared that his children initially struggled with the language barrier at their new French school leading to heartbreaking moments as they expressed their frustrations.
“The rugby was the easy bit,” Nowell told BBC Rugby Union Weekly. “The boys made me feel very welcome, but the family side of it was more difficult.” He recalled his children’s struggles with his son saying, “No one speaks to me” and “I don’t want to go to school.” However, with the support of his teammates and family, Nowell’s children soon adjusted, and life in France began to improve.
Nowell, who has extended his contract with La Rochelle until 2027, says the adjustment was worth it. He now enjoys life on the west coast of France and playing for La Rochelle has been rewarding. “The rugby was easy and I loved it straight away,” he added, noting that he played the most minutes of his career last season.
Looking ahead to La Rochelle’s European campaign, Jack Nowell is excited to return to England for a match against Bath at the Rec. Despite no longer being eligible for England selection due to RFU regulations on overseas players, Nowell is keen to face his former rivals. He anticipates a lively atmosphere and expects some banter from Bath fans, especially given the competitive history between the teams.
