Kevin Sinfield to Extend Coaching Role with England Team

Kevin Sinfield, who initially planned to leave his coaching role with the England team after the tour of Japan and New Zealand, is now expected to continue in some capacity. England head coach Steve Borthwick expressed optimism about retaining Sinfield beyond November, highlighting his desire to keep the former rugby league star involved due to his valued contributions in skills coaching, kicking, and mentorship.

Earlier this year, Kevin Sinfield moved from coaching defense to taking on new coaching responsibilities within the England team. Sinfield’s transition allowed him to focus on skills coaching, kicking and mentoring, bringing valuable expertise to the team under head coach Steve Borthwick. While Kevin Sinfield may not maintain a year-round position, Borthwick anticipates his ongoing involvement during team camps, emphasizing the significant value he brings.

The RFU and clubs recently finalized the new Professional Game Partnership which aims to enhance player preparation for Test rugby. Beginning next season, the RFU will offer enhanced contracts with a centrally contracted component to approximately 20 players. Notably, players like Maro Itoje and Jamie George have already received these hybrid deals which include an annual salary of around £160,000 instead of match fees currently set at £23,000 per game.

Borthwick highlighted that these enhanced contracts will prioritize player health and conditioning, aiming to ensure that England’s top players are consistently in peak form for international competition. The RFU’s initiative reflects a strategic move to optimize player performance and competitiveness on the global stage.
