Leinster began their quest for a fifth Investec Champions Cup title with a dominant second-half performance securing a bonus-point victory over Bristol Bears at Ashton Gate. Fly-half Sam Prendergast starred, scoring 20 points, including two tries after the break while new signing Jordie Barrett and Josh van der Flier also crossed the line. Bristol started strong with Max Lahiff scoring the opening try but Leinster quickly responded through Jordan Larmour, who capitalized on a Rich Lane error.

The teams ended the first half tied, but the introduction of Barrett and South Africa’s RG Snyman tilted the game in Leinster’s favor. Barrett scored a clever try after a dummy and Snyman’s powerful run set up Prendergast for a bonus-point try. Van der Flier added another try, further extending Leinster’s lead. Bristol managed to score a late consolation through Gabriel Ibitoye, who ran clear after a Kieran Marmion kick.

Prendergast’s performance stood out, strengthening his case as Johnny Sexton’s long-term successor for both Leinster and Ireland. He played a key role in several tries including a combination with Barrett, showcasing his vision and ability to orchestrate play. He also kicked five conversions, completing a stellar outing. Bristol’s chances suffered after early injuries to key players with fly-half AJ MacGinty and prop Ellis Genge both leaving the field.

Bristol’s head coach, Pat Lam, expressed frustration at the disruptions but praised his team’s resilience, acknowledging their strong competition despite the setbacks. Lam expects Genge to recover in time for Bristol’s next match against La Rochelle. Leinster will face Clermont Auvergne next while Bristol will travel to La Rochelle, aiming to bounce back from this defeat.
