Marcus Smith has been improving his partnership with England’s attack, according to assistant coach Andrew Strawbridge. Despite England’s recent struggles including five consecutive losses in the Autumn Nations Series against New Zealand, Australia and South Africa, Smith, 25, has stood out as one of the team’s top performers. His creativity and kicking accuracy have been key but England’s current five-match losing streak is their worst since 2018.
Strawbridge praised Marcus Smith for his openness to discussions and his evolving understanding of the game. “He’s getting better at his role,” Strawbridge said. Since his Premiership debut for Harlequins at 18, Smith has been regarded as England’s long-term fly-half solution, now with 38 caps and six consecutive starts. Unfortunately, five of those matches have ended in defeat with four losses coming down to the final play.
Smith’s decision-making was on display during England’s opening try against South Africa when he chose to set up Ollie Sleightholme rather than attempt a drop-goal. Strawbridge highlighted that England’s attack allows for such improvisation with decision-making shared across the team, rather than placing all responsibility on the fly-half like a quarterback in American football.
This Sunday, England will face Japan under former head coach Eddie Jones, who guided them to a heavy 35-point loss in June. England enters as favorites to break their losing streak. Strawbridge remains optimistic, stating that while the team’s progress might be hard for some to see, their development is ongoing. “This is a step, not a saving grace,” he said as England continues to work toward becoming a strong Test team.
