Matt Dawson, World Cup winner discusses in his BBC Sport column why England should not be criticized for their efforts and playing style, despite a 29-20 defeat to South Africa. He acknowledges that while South Africa are better, England showed determination especially in the early stages of the match. Although England started strong, their bench lacked the impact to finish the game and they were unable to maintain control during the final 20 minutes.

However, Dawson refrains from criticizing the team, noting a positive shift under head coach Steve Borthwick in contrast to the uninspiring play under Eddie Jones. Dawson highlights that Borthwick while not a charismatic leader, has found a way to get the best out of this England squad. He notes that a strong coaching backroom staff, like those seen with France and Ireland, could add more dynamic influence.

Despite the loss, Dawson believes that England fans are more engaged with the team’s current playstyle and that the pressure on Borthwick is not as intense as many might expect especially with one more game to play in the series. Dawson also questions decisions such as removing captain Jamie George early in the game, noting that influential players like George should ideally stay on the field to maintain leadership.

He compares England’s fine margins to those of the world’s top teams such as South Africa, who showed composure when it mattered most. England displayed strong defensive effort but made mistakes at critical moments, like Ben Earl’s missed tackle on Damian de Allende which ultimately cost them. Matt Dawson emphasizes that top teams rarely make these mistakes which is where England must improve to compete at the highest level.
