Police Continue Search for Tom Voyce After He Goes Missing

Police are concerned that former England rugby international Tom Voyce may have died after going missing in Northumberland where flooding from Storm Darragh caused severe conditions. Voyce, 43, failed to return home after an evening with friends on Sunday. Authorities believe he attempted to cross Abberwick Ford near Alnwic  in his car when the river’s strong current swept it away. Northumbria Police launched a search and found the vehicle, confirming that they suspect Voyce tried to escape the car and got swept away by the river’s current.

Specialist officers including those from the Marine Section along with drones, dog handlers and local Mountain Rescue teams, continue searching for Voyce. His family including his wife Anna, expressed gratitude for the support from authorities and the local community. Despite the challenging circumstances including the swollen river caused by heavy rain from the storm, police remain committed to the search.

Ch Supt Helena Barron shared her condolences and acknowledged the challenges in recovering Voyce, given the adverse conditions. Voyce originally from Truro in Cornwall earned nine caps for England between 2001 and 2006 and played for Wasps, Bath and Gloucester before retiring in 2013. He has lived in Alnwick since 2020. Rugby teams have shown their support with England Rugby, Gloucester Rugby and Bath Rugby all sending their thoughts and prayers to his family and friends during this tragic time.
