Regan Grace has surprised by joining Wales’ 34-player squad for their upcoming tour of Australia in July. Regan Grace joined the training squad last week for injured Giles, possibly debuting against the Wallabies. Head coach Warren Gatland has actively selected Grace, along with Cardiff hooker Efan Daniel and Gloucester wing Josh Hathaway, as three uncapped players in the squad. This decision reflects Gatland’s intention to introduce fresh talent into the team ahead of the tour.
Despite the return of Six Nations skipper Dafydd Jenkins, Dewi Lake has earned the captaincy after impressing in the match against South Africa. Wales, who have suffered seven consecutive Test defeats, face a tough challenge against Australia, a team they have not beaten in Australia since 1969. However, Gatland remains optimistic about the team’s prospects, emphasizing their focus on improvement and development as they adapt to international rugby.
The tour comprises three matches:
– Wales will play against Australia in Sydney on July 6th.
– They will face Australia again in Melbourne on July 13th.
– Finally, they will go up against Queensland Reds in Brisbane on July 19th.
The squad features several new faces aiming for their first caps, aligning with Gatland’s strategy of integrating fresh talent. Despite injuries affecting front-row players like Henry Thomas, Keiron Assiratti and Elliot Dee, Gatland is determined to field a competitive side and overcome these setbacks. Experienced stalwarts Dillon Lewis and Ryan Elias will provide crucial leadership to mentor younger squad members through upcoming challenges.
Their guidance aims to strengthen Wales’ team cohesion and resilience during the tour. Meanwhile, Jenkins, Christ Tshiunza, Tommy Reffell, and Nick Tompkins returning bolster Wales’ lineup. The squad’s depth will face a test against formidable adversaries despite the absence of key players like Jac Morgan, Taulupe Faletau and Josh Adams due to injuries or rest.
