Sam Tomkins Makes Shock Comeback with Catalans Dragons

Sam Tomkins, the former England captain, has made a surprising return to the field, coming out of retirement to play for Catalans Dragons this season. The 35-year-old, who retired in 2023 due to a persistent knee issue, had previously spent four years with the Dragons. After his retirement, Tomkins continued with the club in an off-field role. Recently, Tomkins has agreed to return to play under coach Steve McNamara for the remainder of the current Super League campaign.

His comeback will begin with a match against Hull FC in Perpignan on July 27. “Steve asked me a couple of weeks ago about the chances of my return, and in the last two weeks, that conversation led to me signing with Catalans until the end of the season,” Tomkins shared with Sky Sports. He added that McNamara informed the team of his return in a recent meeting.

Sam Tomkins, a distinguished player, won Super League’s Man of Steel award in 2012 and 2021. His career highlights include three Super League Grand Final victories (2010, 2013, 2018) with Wigan Warriors, as well as Challenge Cup wins in 2011 and 2013. At the international level, he has represented England in the World Cup semi-finals in 2013 and 2021, though England faced dramatic exits at the hands of New Zealand and Samoa, respectively.

Tomkins’ return to playing will add significant experience and depth to the Catalans Dragons as they aim to finish the season strongly. His previous successes and leadership qualities are expected to be valuable assets for the team.
