The Six Nations Championship will introduce 20-minute red cards for the first time this year, building on a trial from the Autumn Nations Cup. The new rule will apply to the men’s, women’s, and Under-20s competitions. The 20-minute red card allows a dismissed player to return after 20 minutes, aiming to punish the player rather than the team. However, referees can still issue a full red card for serious fouls like dangerous play.
The move comes as part of ongoing efforts to reduce head contact in rugby, a focus since 2017. High-profile games such as the 2022 Women’s Rugby World Cup final and the 2023 Men’s Rugby World Cup final saw teams play with only 14 players after red cards. Six Nations chief Julie Paterson emphasized balancing safety with the fan experience while introducing other law trials in 2025.
These include added protection for scrum-halves and relaxing rules regarding straight throws in uncontested line-outs. Additionally, the Six Nations will continue changes introduced last year such as reducing the time for conversions, quicker formation of scrums and line-outs, and referees broadcasting key decisions to stadium audiences. However, Netflix will not continue its behind-the-scenes documentary after releasing the second season of Six Nations: Full Contact on January 29.
Chief executive Tom Harrison confirmed that this decision was unrelated to the reception of the documentary. Looking ahead, officials are in discussions about the 2026 Championship fixture schedule. They will shorten the tournament from seven to six weeks with only one rest week. The changes may also include more evening kick-offs and adjustments to avoid clashes with other major sporting events.
