Tom Voyce former England teammate of Rugby World Cup winner Lawrence Dallaglio has reportedly been swept away while trying to cross a flooded river during Storm Darragh, prompting Dallaglio to express deep sorrow. Police fear the 43-year-old has tragically died after the current carried his vehicle away at Abberwick Ford, near Alnwick, Northumberland. Voyce, who had been out with friends went missing on Sunday afternoon when he failed to return home.
Authorities later found his vehicle but they believe that in his attempt to escape, the fast-moving water swept him away. Teams have been searching the riverbanks from the ford to the sea at Alnmouth since then. The search involves the coastguard, drones, dog handlers and volunteers from local rescue teams. Dallaglio shared his shock and sorrow on social media, urging people to respect Voyce’s family during this difficult time.
Other rugby figures including Matt Dawson also expressed their sadness. Premiership Rugby, Gloucester Rugby, Bath Rugby and the British & Irish Lions all sent their heartfelt condolences to Voyce’s family and friends. Voyce, who earned nine caps for England between 2001 and 2006, played for Wasps, Bath and Gloucester before retiring in 2013.
He also worked for Investec. His family has thanked the police, friends and the local community for their ongoing support during the search. Storm Darragh caused significant flooding across the UK, prompting authorities to issue flood warnings in the area. The search continues, with specialist police officers, drones and volunteers working together to find Tom Voyce. The rugby world is mourning his passing.
