Wales hit a new low in their 143-year rugby history, suffering a record-breaking 53-16 defeat to Australia at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. This marked their heaviest loss to the Wallabies and their 11th consecutive Test defeat, placing head coach Warren Gatland under intense scrutiny. Gatland’s side has not won a match in over 400 days with their last victory dating back to the 2023 Rugby World Cup.

Australia dominated with eight tries including hat-tricks from hooker Matt Faessler and full-back Tom Wright. First-half tries by Wright, Nick Frost and Faessler gave the Wallabies a 19-0 lead before Wales responded through Aaron Wainwright’s try and Gareth Anscombe’s kicking, cutting the deficit to 19-13 at halftime.

However, the Wallabies overpowered Wales in the second half despite being reduced to 14 men following a 20-minute red card for Samu Kerevi’s dangerous tackle on Jac Morgan. Faessler added two more tries and Wright and Len Ikitau sealed the comprehensive victory. Wales’ defeat extended their winless streak leaving them without a Test victory in Cardiff since August 2023.

Gatland’s second stint as head coach has yielded only six wins from 23 matches with the team now ranked 11th globally. The loss also highlighted issues beyond the pitch with former players and pundits questioning Gatland’s position and fans showing discontent with boos and early departures.

Wales now face world champions South Africa next, hoping to avoid ending the year winless for the first time since 1937. Meanwhile, Australia builds momentum with back-to-back victories, heading into fixtures against Scotland and Ireland with confidence.

The dismal result leaves Welsh rugby at a crossroads, calling into question not just Gatland’s future but also the leadership within the Welsh Rugby Union.
