Wallabies Shine Under Schmidt, Defeat England

Wallabies received praise from former players and pundits for their stunning victory over England on Saturday with many calling the win a turning point for Australian rugby under coach Joe Schmidt. Since their last triumph at Twickenham in 2015, the Wallabies have struggled with their lowest point being a World Cup elimination in the pool stage last year. However, Saturday’s 2023 win sparked optimism for the team’s future.

Christy Doran of The Roar described the victory as a spring of hope for Australia, marking a major rebound for the Wallabies. Iain Payten from the Sydney Morning Herald went further, comparing it to their famous 2010 win over the All Blacks in Hong Kong. The win was particularly sweet for Schmidt whose gamble to start rugby league convert Joseph Suaalii paid off. Suaalii in his first rugby union match, impressed with his athleticism and a key assist for a Tom Wright try.

Michael Hooper, former Wallabies captain, praised Suaalii’s natural talent, calling it an “X-factor” that can’t be coached. Despite Suaalii’s standout performance, Payten suggested that other players such as Rob Valetini, Fraser McReight, Harry Wilson and Angus Bell equally deserved credit for their physicality and impact at the breakdown which helped Australia regain control after a shaky start.

The victory represented the Wallabies’ best performance under Schmidt, providing a significant confidence boost for the team and their fans. Although questions about their competitiveness for the 2027 World Cup and next year’s British and Irish Lions tour remain, Saturday’s comeback has reignited hope for Australian rugby’s future.

Peter FitzSimons former Wallaby, noted that while the team is not yet at the dawn of a golden era, the signs are promising after a long period of struggle.
