Warren Gatland acknowledges the pressure amid Wales’ worst losing streak under his coaching tenure, following their defeat to South Africa at Twickenham. The loss marked Wales’ seventh consecutive defeat, their longest since a string of eight losses between 2012 and 2013. Gatland, preparing for a tough tour to Australia, accepts responsibility for the team’s performance, preferring to shield his players from external pressure.
“I understand the significance of results, and I’m willing to shoulder that pressure rather than let it affect the players,” Gatland stated. “However, our focus isn’t solely on winning, as additional external pressure can distract from our goal of individual player improvement and decision-making at this level of intensity.”
Reflecting on previous successful strategies, Warren Gatland highlighted Wales’ approach during the World Cup, emphasizing the importance of becoming a resilient team rather than solely fixating on victory. Despite recent challenges, Gatland remains committed to developing young talent, optimistic about their potential despite setbacks.
“We need to improve in certain areas, particularly capitalizing on attacking opportunities and maintaining defensive accuracy,” Gatland added. “These are learning opportunities for our squad, and we’ll continue to assess and refine our approach.”
Gatland, the longest-serving coach in Wales’ history, recognizes the demanding nature of international rugby, where results ultimately define success.
