Warren Gatland criticized the lack of winning experience among those involved in the recent independent review of Welsh rugby, and former Wales flanker Ellis Jenkins responded. After a record 12 consecutive Test defeats, the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) conducted a review to improve the game in the country. Gatland, however, expressed doubts about the validity of feedback from those without experience in high-level winning environments, including some players and individuals involved in the review.
Jenkins, speaking on Scrum V: The Warm Up, disagreed with Gatland’s perspective. He argued that questioning the feedback from individuals who haven’t participated in a winning international environment was unfair. Jenkins emphasized that even if players haven’t been part of a successful campaign, their feedback remains valuable. He suggested that while not all feedback needs to be acted upon, it should still get acknowledged. Jenkins felt that Gatland’s remarks undermined the process and the people involved.
Wales’ recent struggles include defeats against Fiji, Australia and South Africa in the Autumn Nations Series with their last Test win coming against Georgia in the 2023 World Cup. After the review which an external company conducted, Warren Gatland remains in charge as head coach for the Six Nations, despite ongoing issues within Welsh rugby. Gatland admitted that Welsh rugby including the national men’s team, currently doesn’t meet standards.
Jonathan Davies a former Wales and Lions player also weighed in, stressing that players should have the opportunity to voice their opinions. Jenkins supported this view, stating that player feedback is essential for improvement. He added that while coaches may not always agree with players, they must hear and consider feedback for the team’s growth.
