Whitehaven head coach Kyle Amor praised Wakefield Trinity for their support which he believes will help his troubled Championship club finish the season. Currently 13th in the Championship and in the relegation zone, Whitehaven has faced significant off-field challenges including the resignation of their chief executive, board member departures and player strikes over unpaid wages. Wakefield Trinity’s generosity became apparent during their recent fixture against Whitehaven at the DIY Kitchens Stadium.
Specifically, the West Yorkshire club raised £12,000 through ticket sales and bucket collections at the match. This financial aid arrives as a lifeline for Whitehaven, who have struggled with financial difficulties and a limited squad of just 15 players. Amor expressed his gratitude, stating, “I want to applaud Wakefield for what they’ve done. It probably allows us to finish the season now with what we’ve got.”
Despite their 60-6 defeat to Wakefield, Whitehaven benefits from this crucial support, which will help them continue through the remaining three games of the season. Amor acknowledged the crucial support from Wakefield’s owner, Matt Ellis, who announced that all funds from £10 tickets and donations from Trinity supporters would go to Whitehaven.
This generosity came from the 5,096-strong crowd and significantly helped Whitehaven amid their financial difficulties. Amor commented, “What Matt Ellis has done for us in our hour of need was a generous gesture. He didn’t have to do that but his support will likely help us through to the end of the year.” Given the uncertainty about fulfilling their remaining fixtures, Amor’s arrival as head coach was seen as a hopeful change.
Previously, the club managed with a squad of just 14 players during a win over Dewsbury Rams. Thanks to Wakefield’s aid, Whitehaven can now focus on their remaining matches with renewed hope.
