Judd Trump, the world number one edged past three-time champion John Higgins 6-5 in a thrilling final-frame decider to secure a UK Championship quarter-final spot at the York Barbican. The match began with a cautious, tactical exchange leaving the scores tied at 2-2 by the mid-session interval.
Both players found fluency afterward with Trump producing a brilliant 111 break and two half-centuries to lead 5-4. Higgins resilient under pressure, crafted breaks of 58 and 106 before forcing a decider with a composed 66.
However, a loose safety by Higgins in the final frame allowed Judd Trump to capitalize, sealing victory with an exceptional century. Reflecting on his performance, Trump told BBC Sport, “When the real pressure is on, I produce my best stuff. The game was too slow, so I sped it up and took more risks.”
He faces China’s Zhang Anda next, who staged a stunning comeback from 5-1 down to defeat Stuart Bingham 6-5. Meanwhile, world champion Kyren Wilson continued his strong form, beating Chris Wakelin 6-2.
Wilson, ranked 8th globally, built breaks of 85 and 108, punishing Wakelin’s missed chances to secure a comfortable win. He will play Michael Holt, ranked 98th, who rallied from 5-2 down to edge out Jak Jones 6-5.
Bingham’s bid for a Triple Crown ended in disappointment after Zhang’s fightback. Despite leading 4-1 and narrowly missing a 147 maximum, Bingham faltered as Zhang compiled breaks of 81, 70 and 108 to clinch the decider.
Trump, despite consistent success this season, remains unsatisfied with his form. “I’m probably the eighth favorite. I need to hit the practice table, improve and find myself again,” he said.
