Terry Griffiths the 1979 World Snooker Champion passed away at the age of 77. His death has left a profound impact on Welsh snooker with three-time world champion Mark Williams calling him an “inspiration” to generations of players. Griffiths made history in 1979 by winning the World Championship as a qualifier. After a successful playing career, he became a respected coach and mentored top players such as Stephen Hendry, Mark Allen and fellow Welshman Mark Williams.
Williams, who won the World Championship in 2000, 2003 and 2018 fondly recalled visiting Griffiths’ club as a young player where Griffiths consistently encouraged young talent and rewarded tournament winners. In addition to his World Championship win, Griffiths achieved snooker’s ‘Triple Crown’ by also winning the Masters in 1980 and the UK Championship in 1982. He reached a career-high of third in the world rankings and earned an OBE in 2007 for his services to snooker. Griffiths also became a beloved television commentator and pundit for the BBC.
Williams shared an emotional memory of their last meeting when he visited Terry Griffiths, who was suffering from dementia. Despite his condition, Griffiths excitedly suggested they go to the club, demonstrating his enduring love for the game and his mentorship. Williams fondly remembered their rivalry including Griffiths teasing him about their last match in 1997 when Williams defeated him in a final-frame decider in the World Championship.
Griffiths’ influence on snooker and his support for countless players will remain in memory. His passing alongside that of Ray Reardon marks the end of an era for Welsh snooker. Williams expressed that Griffiths would be greatly missed.
